The Disgrace of Gijón is the reason why the third match day is played at the same time. West Germany and Austria conspired to knock Algeria out. This was in the 1982 World Cup, and sparked a change in the format of the third matchday. Algeria were set to advance to the next round, but Austria felt like changing that. It is so the opponent, does not know the results, and therefore the games can't be influenced by the other result. In my opinion, I'm glad they changed it.
