Japan’s Ambassador to Australia Shingo Yamagami says former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was a “true friend” of Australia.

Mr Abe died after being shot while making a campaign speech in the city of Nara on Friday.

Mr Yamagami said he is touched by the “outpourings of well wishes” and messages of condolences for the late prime minister.

“This shows the achievement Abe did for the promotion of the relationship between Australia and Japan,” he told Sky News Australia.
