What’s the future of Cruising and Cruise Ships? Can looking at History help predict the future resilience of the Cruise Industry?

To find out whether Cruising and Cruise Lines will survive into 2021, maritime historian Bill Miller joins me to look at the resilience of cruising over time.

Let us look at this in light of the 2020 COVID-19 crisis world wide. 2020 is set to be the global cruise industry’s most challenging year. The vast majority of the global cruise ships are sitting idle, with no passengers and only their crew on board.

This includes cancellations of cruises from Norwegian Cruise Line, Cunard, P&O, Princess Cruises, Virgin Voyages (Scarlett Lady), Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Lines.

Countries around the world have implemented cruising bans, including the United Kingdom and United States while in Australia, Cruise Ships have been evicted from Australia following the Ruby Princess COVID-19 outbreak.

With unprecedented cruise shut downs, the future of the cruise industry is uncertain. The US$150bn global cruise industry accounts for over $50bn in wages and salaries world wide. Cruise lines employ 1.17 million people.

Cruise lines impacted include Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Virgin Voyages, Fred Olsen, Celebrity, Princess, Saga and more! But with cruise ships siting empty around the world, and no end in sight, people are starting to ask whether cruising can survive?

BUT... Cruise Lines Are Resilient:

Throughout history cruise lines have faced huge challenges, ranging from shipwrecks to the unparalleled danger posed to global travel WWI and WWII. At each cruising crisis, the cruise industry and cruise lines adapted to become stronger and more resilient over time.

The video covers the global impact of COVID-19 on cruising and cruise lines, as well as looking back at how shipping lines adapted to major cruising crises the past.

Examples include changes after the Titanic disaster, changes after the Great Depression and World War II as well as the cruise industries response to changes from the Achille Lauro disaster.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) say 82% of cruisers are repeat guests, and loyalty to cruising and cruise lines is high. The future cruise line industry will look different to how it did at the start of 2020, but it will survive. Like countless past occasions, cruising will adapt and become a safer and stronger industry for the future.
