Moving in different directions can be incredibly powerful to help build up muscles to support your joints 💪🏽
Moving in one direction over and over and over again can lead to irritation and this is what happens if you primarily depend on walking forwards for your main exercise ☝🏽
This is by no means saying walking is bad, but adding some simple variety before, during or after your walk can be very helpful! ✅
If you have hip arthritis or knee arthritis- lack of variety can also lead to loss of range of motion in certain directions. This is why it’s important to challenge it ☝🏽
Starting off simply with stepping sideways and backwards can be adequate- making sure to use upper body support as needed as it can challenge your balance ⚠️
You can then try walking backwards for a longer distance, try stepping sideways up or down hills, add a resistance band- there are TONS of ways to incorporate this 😇
