Built on water a thousand years ago, Venice is now in danger. The threat does not necessarily come from the rising waters, but rather from the 28 million visitors who invade Venice every year.
On the Grand Canal, the large increase in gondolas, cabs, cruise ships, is causing a big problem: the waves generated by this traffic are gnawing away at the foundations of the historic buildings.
