Penang's Faiz Subri has wasted no time in throwing down an early contender for the Fifa Puskas award. The accolade is given to the player who is deemed to have scored best goal of the year.
The 28-year-old attacker scored a cracking free-kick for his team in a 4-1 win over Pahang in the Malaysia Super League (MSL) on Tuesday (Feb 16), a goal which has since been picked up by the international press.
Standing over the ball some 32m out, and with a crowd of players gathered in the penalty area, most would expect him to whip the ball into the area for someone to attack.
With one swipe of his right boot, the forward hit the ball with such venom it swerved left, seemingly going out, before curving right and dipping into goal, leaving Pahang goalkeeper Nasril Nourdin - and anyone watching - stunned.
The goal brought back memories of Brazilian Roberto Carlos' mind-bending free-kick goal against France. Known for his spectacular "banana kicks", Carlos' attempt also looked to be heading out before spinning into goal.
Faiz finished the game with two goals, as Penang notched their first win of the MSL season. But it is his second goal which stole the headlines, and which people will remember in time to come.
