Austrian Felix Baumgartner has broken the record for the highest ever skydive by jumping from a capsule 128,000ft (39km) above New Mexico.
The 43-year-old daredevil now holds the record for the highest ever manned balloon flight, and is waiting to discover whether or not he has broken the sound barrier.
Opening his parachute after 4m15s, he missed out on the record for the longest freefall - 4m36s, set by Joe Kittinger in 1960.
EXTREME Skydive: FELIX BAUMGARTNER JUMP from Edge of Space Oct.14, 2012
At a news conference, Brian Utley of the International Federation of Sports Aviation said Baumgartner reached a maximum speed of 833.9 mph during his jump Sunday over the New Mexico desert.
That amounts to Mach 1.24, which is faster than the speed of sound. No one has ever reached that speed wearing only a high-tech suit.
'Felix Baumgartner made history today, this clip shows you him jumping from the capsule and the freefall! Such a crazy moment, viewed by 8,000,000 people worldwide LIVE.'
