December 12, 1987 - Believing he was purposely clipped with a knee, Isiah Thomas challenged former teammate Sidney Green to a duel, twice making contact with Green's face before a full scale brawl ensued. Seven Pistons and two Knicks were fined a total of $8,500 for their roles in the fracas.
Thomas earned the lion's share of involuntary charity, coughing up $3,000 for his role as instigator. Green was fined $1,000 for retaliation while Patrick Ewing emerged as the disciplinary underdog, paying $1,500 for a series of punches he slipped in after the situation devolved along the sideline. Detroit's William Bedford, Ralph Lewis, Ron Moore, Chuck Nevitt, Dennis Rodman and John Salley all paid automatic fines of $500 for leaving the bench.
For what it's worth, Thomas and Green appeared to be right back on light-hearted and familiar terms 13 days later when the two teams met in Madison Square Garden on Christmas Day.
