The Side Kick Chamber Drill is an excellent way for athletes of all levels to build strength and power with their karate kicks. The Side Kick Chamber Drill takes athletes through a series of resisted and un-resisted sets, to help athletes increase strength, power, and balance with their karate kick.
For the Side Kick Chamber Drill athletes will need a set of Kbands and a coach or peer to supervise the karate kick drill. After the athlete has secured the Kbands above the knee athletes will move onto all fours on the ground. Athletes can maximize balance and focus on leg chamber by being on all fours for this karate kick drill.
From this position athletes will bring their knee into their chest and explode out with maximum force. Athletes should explode out on every kick and bring the knee all the way back into the chest before the next kick. Maintain the leg in a straight line and be sure athletes are pushing through the resistance, not letting the Kbands disrupt the athletes form.
For intermediate and older athletes the Side Kick Chamber Drill should be performed with 10 resisted karate kicks with each leg. For less advanced, younger athletes, this number can be reduced. Following the resisted karate kicks athletes will remove the Kbands and perform 10 un-resisted karate kicks on each side. Make sure athletes pay extra attention to form and technique while performing the un-resisted karate kicks.
