(Meredith) — Macy’s has announced plans to furlough most of its 130,000 U.S. workforce, starting this week, as stores remain closed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The retail company, which also owns Bloomingdales and Bluemercury, said it will be moving to the "absolute minimum workforce needed to maintain basic operations."

"The COVID-19 outbreak continues to take a heavy toll on Macy’s, Inc. business. Our top priority is the health and safety of our customers, colleagues, and communities during this unprecedented crisis," the company said in a press release.

At least through May, furloughed employees who are enrolled in health benefits will continue to receive coverage with the company covering 100% of the premium. The company plans to bring workers back on a staggered basis as business resumes.

All of Macy's stores have been closed since March 18 and will remain closed until it is safe to reopen.
