YC Gary Lee, MBChB, PhD, FCCP, FRCP, FRACP, University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia, outlines his presentation on the management of pleural effusion in patients with lung cancer. Lung cancer is a significant cause of pleural effusion, culminating in a large number of hospitalizations, reduced physical ability, and negative impact on patients’ quality of life. Whilst interventional drainages can strain the fluid from the pleural cavity, the procedure is not always effective. In recent years, indwelling pleural catheters have shown benefits in preventing pleural effusion in patients with advanced lung cancer, enabling physical activity, and improving the quality of life. Dr Lee shares that current trials aim to address the concern of infection as antibiotics can interrupt cancer treatment and the infections are occasionally severe.
