Australian Jewish Association President Dr David Adler says the "big message" coming out of the Holocaust was supposed to be "never again".
"Holocaust education should be compulsory in our schools - it is such a huge event in human history - it has lessons in it, not just of significance to the Jewish community, but to humanity," Dr Adler told Sky News host Rowan Dean.
"Never again means that we should intervene - we should not be silent if there is the slightest hint of major racist or religious persecution, and certainly intervene before genocide.
"I think the only way the 'never again' lesson is going to be meaningful is if people have a reasonable understanding of what man is capable, in the most evil times, of doing."
