After comparing Neumeier's work to Heinlein's novel, the studio decided to buy the film rights from the author. This way, they could glean some interesting ideas from the book and avoid any potential legal issues. As a result, the original movie "Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine" became an adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's novel "Starship Troopers".
That's when director PAUL VERHOEVEN showed interest in the project. He had just come off the painful failure of "Showgirls" and needed a big hit to redeem himself. Verhoeven was very disappointed when he tried to read Heinlein's book. He later said that he found the novel boring, bad, and heavily promoted militarism, which he despised. Verhoeven talked to screenwriter Edward Neumeier, with whom he got along well on the "RoboCop" set, and convinced him to make extensive revisions to the script.
