The Three Lions boss is widely expected to step down from his role after Euro 2024, ending his eight-year tenure. While the focus is on Saturday’s quarter-final clash with Switzerland, attention is also on the future, with appointing a new manager likely to be the FA’s first task.
Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been mentioned as a candidate to succeed Southgate, alongside names like Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, who are currently working at club level. Another prominent name is recently departed Liverpool manager Klopp, who is enjoying a well-deserved break after leaving Anfield at the end of last season.
Klopp has suggested he might retire from management, a notion supported by German football pundit and ex-Chelsea player Sebastian Kneissl during an exclusive chat with talkSPORT.
“I can see Jurgen Klopp never working again as a manager,” he said on Friday's Euro Gameday Warm Up show.
“He is very self-aware and thinks about his impact. If he takes another job, I doubt it will be with the USA national team. The only option I see is him replacing Julian Nagelsmann as the German national team manager. I think he could represent Germany at a level similar to Franz Beckenbauer.”
Regarding the possibility of Klopp replacing Southgate as England’s manager, Kneissl believes the FA should consider it, despite his belief that Klopp is likely to decline.
“The FA must talk to Jurgen! It's their duty to get the best manager, so they must approach him,” he said. He added with a laugh, “But will he take it? No! Even if they know they would likely get a ‘No’, it’s their responsibility to ask.”
