Join us in today’s episode as we discuss BMW’s Crank Case Ventilation System and the issues it can cause.
This is something we want to address as we see questions on a regular basis with symptoms synonymous to a failed Crank Case Ventilation system.
If you are seeing lean codes, misfire codes, or even higher engine temperatures, check this system first.
As BMWs age, the plastic these systems are manufactured with becomes brittle. After hundreds or thousands of heat cycles, the plastic cracks or ruptures allowing additional air to enter behind the mass air flow sensor meaning... the car cannot adjust the air/ fuel mixture leading to a number of issues referenced above.
BMW’s Crank Case Ventilation system or oil separation system is comprised of a plastic valve and three or four vacuum lines. The failure can be in the valve, one of the lines, or a combination of both.
It’s generally a good idea to replace the entire system as it becomes difficult to replace individual components within the system due to the above mentioned heat cycled and brittle components.
