I'm Rick from Legacy Ford; I'm going to give a tutorial on the quality differences between the Ford Motorcraft and aftermarket brand oil filters.
With the Ford Motorcraft brand, it has a wide spring; when the pressure from your engine blows the oil up, it keeps equal pressure on the filter down. Whereas, on the aftermarket brands, they have a smaller individual spring, so the filter can rock. When it rocks with the pressure, oil can seep in, which means that not all the oil is going through the filter.
An indepth look inside the filter shows that the Ford Motorcraft brand has the leaves of the oil cartridge molded directly to the upper and lower caps. The aftermarket brands, however, are merely glued and some lesser quality filters will only have a cardboard base on the bottom.
Another thing to point out, with the proper Ford Motorcraft filter, it has a silicone valve in the bottom. This prevents the oil from getting clogged. With the other 2 examples, one only has a plastic spacer, which will melt with the heat of the engine and the other is equipped with a rubber valve, which will not stand up to the heat of the engine.
The Ford brand filter is more expensive by a couple of dollars, but with the handiwork and quality you get with the proper Ford Motorcraft brand, it is worth the cost. Plus, you will not be getting an inferior product that may wreck or warp your engine.
