Loveland pass i about an hour west of Denver, where US route 6 crosses the continental divide. There is a parking area at the top of the mountain pass where backcountry skiers and snowboarders can ski off the side of the road. There is a route that is commonly taken down through some trees to a lower parking area.
Once skiers have reached the bottom they need to hitchhike back to the top. There are ski resorts on both sides of Loveland Pass, so the traffic is fairly regular. Most people can get a ride back to the top in 15 minutes or less.
This is a great location for fun day on the snow skiing or snowboarding without the cost of a lift ticket. On the weekends Loveland pass can get a little crowded, but there is a great sense of camaraderie here, so the extra people add to the enjoyment.
More adventurous people can hike into the backcountry from the upper parking area, but it is not recommended for beginners. If you are curious about backcountry skiing or snowboarding and are in the area, Loveland Pass is a great place to get started.
As I mentioned above, this is a segment from a full length documentary about skiing and snowboarding. the full film is available now on Tubi TV.
