Buying you first watch can be a scary thing if you do not have the right guidance. Here are 5 tips I want to share with you to help make it a great experience.

I am Watch Eric and thank you for tuning in. Buying your first luxury watch can be a scary thing if you do not have any experience or someone to guide you through the process. In this video I will be sharing 5 tips to help you make your first luxury watch purchase an enjoyable experience.

Tip 1: Establish Your Budget
This is the first step to your journey because without knowing your budget you will not know what to look for or where to start. The key is to establish a realistic budget that you can achieve. I have clients that come to me and say they want to buy a watch. I ask them what is there budget and there response is “I don’t know’. It’s important to know is your budget can accommodate a Rolex or a Richard Mille. That way it can narrow down you search, or else you will be endlessly looking at options. Set a budget for options and all have a look at what a little bit more can get you. Sometimes you find it worth the effort to go up another $1,500.

Tip 2: Know Your Intentions For This Watch
This is very important because one of the famous phrases people say is “ I am only going to wear this watch when I go out”. They always end up wearing it everyday. If you plan to wear it daily for work the you need to see what style best fits your job. For example if you work in mostly a office type setting wearing business attire than perhaps in the Rolex line you may want to go with a DateJust. If you job is more outdoors like a project manager at a construction site. Than perhaps a Rolex sports model like a Submariner or GMT Master will better suit you. What you intend to do with this watch is important to select the right model. If you plan tower everyday. Then have a look at your lifestyle and how you dress. If you mostly dress in suits then perhaps a Rolex Skydweller on a leather strap would suit you better. So choose something that will go with you style of fashion or lifestyle so that i can get the most wrist time possible.

Tip 3: Choose A Model That Retains Value
Choosing a model that retains value is important because it will always leave you room for a future upgrade.
Today it’s you favorite watch but tomorrow you may be ready to move on and upgrade. This step works closely with step1 because sometimes you may want to buy a watch that is X amount of money, but for $1,500 more you can get a watch that in the long run when you are ready to upgrade will give you a lot more back in return. An example is with a brand like Chopard or Breitling. You can get some good deals and value with these brands but for $1,500-$2,000 more you can possibly get an Omega or Rolex that will give you more value later when it’s time to trade.

Tip 4: Go For Price And Condition
Price and condition is the most important thing that I look for when buying a watch. For you first watch you may want it to have the box and the papers but don’t let that be the determining factor. If you were buying an AP Skeleton for example at a premium price obviously you would want it to have it. What I mean by this is that the most important thing is the condition of the watch. i would rather have a mint condition watch at a good price than a watch with box and papers that is over polished etc. Overall condition for me is everything.

Tip 5: Choose Your Seller
You have to decide if you are going to buy it from a dealer in person or perhaps an online store. Some people do not like to buy in a traditional retail setting and rather buy from the comfort of there own home via online. Others like to build a relationship with a dealer that can guide them through there collecting journey. I for one like this approach better. You have to choose what type of experience you want out of this. A watch buying experience can be achieved both in person or from long distance. You just have to find the right person or company. During this process ask plenty of questions that you my have and make sure that you feel comfortable. Buying your fist watch should be an enjoyable thing and make an experience out of it.
