It’s Why Pharmacy Wednesday and this week we are featuring Sandy Dervisevic, a P2 on our Meridian campus. Sandy grew up in Boise, Idaho and enjoys playing sports, mainly soccer. He also likes watching NBA games after studying of course. On the weekends, he tries to destress and relax by staying home with family and watching movies.
Sandy was intrigued by the direct and vast impact pharmacists have within the community, especially at the retail setting. He believes pharmacists can be the first line of defense for individuals but that they are also involved in the last line of defense and ensuring the safety for our community. He says the world of pharmacy is vastly expanding and the various paths we can take are an exciting and promising part of the future for our careers.
Sandy is a first generation student at both the college level and first individual from his family to be enrolled in a pharmacy program. His favorite aspect of the College of Pharmacy experience so far has been the collective environment that Idaho State has to offer. No individual sees themselves better than the rest and everyone is sharing the same experience which leads to such a helpful and caring atmosphere through out the college.
After graduation he hopes to fine tune his interests and gain more work experience in different settings as well as he continues his educational career. He is interested in hearing the personal experiences from each area of pharmacy. He plans on continuing his education by doing at least one year of residency.
Sandy shadowed a clinical pharmacist in his undergrad years that had been in the profession for over 20 years and says it was great to see his continued passion for the career.
His advice to new students is to attempt to do some research about the various fields of pharmacy as well as gain some experience, whether that be shadowing or working to get a feel of what a pharmacist's duties entails and the work flow they experience on a daily basis. Try to envision yourselves in the field and develop a passion for the career.
We’re so glad Sandy is part of our pharmily! Check him out on Instagram this Friday if you want to learn more about him!
