This lecture explores the prestige model, which argues that states develop nuclear weapons to enjoy the non-military prestige it confers onto them. France's nuclear arc serves as an example. It then describes to major initiatives that the international community has created---Atoms for Peace and the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty---to try to remove the prestige from nuclear weapons.
