Spent the last couple months working on the '81 Z28 Camaro's 350. Decided to junk the factory smog 624 heads and go with a set of 906 Vortec cylinder heads that I got from a good buddy of mine. There was quite a lot involved with removing the cylinder heads, especially with the heater box in the way. Built my own 2.5" Dual X-Pipe exhaust as well, have exhaust cutouts added, then Flowmaster FX mufflers and the rest of the exhaust all the way out the back, into 4" exhaust tips. Went with summit racing's ceramic coated headers. Had the vortec heads magnafluxed/checked for cracks prior to installing, sadly there are a few between the water jacket and bolt holes, not bad enough it can't be used again though. Wanted to go with pressed in studs, valve guides cut down and 3-angle valve job, so I could run a bigger cam, but not investing the $ into cracked heads. I'm fully expecting it to make in the neighborhood of 270hp. A lifter seems like it may not be fully pumping up on cylinder #7's intake valve, it definitely only has 1/3 of the movement compared to the others. Hoping it frees up overtime, double checked valve lash, isn't the problem, and rocker studs still look nice n' pressed in. Runs super smooth, and the exhaust fumes is at a very minimum. Can't wait to start driving it again and see how much she actually improved going from about 8:1 compression to 9.5:1, using new steel head gaskets with a compressed thickness of 0.014", plus whatever that copper spray coating adds to it. Making more progress!
