Dr. Amanda Champlain discusses how to treat spider veins with sclerotherapy. Spider veins (varicose veins) are bulging, bluish veins that look like cords running under your skin and are typically found in the legs and feet. Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure performed by a board-certified dermatologist. It is used to treat varicose and spider veins in the legs. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to close when compression is applied.

I'm Dr. Amanda Champlain a board certified dermatologist and fellowship trained cosmetic and laser specialist. I practice at U.S. Dermatology Partners in Carrollton Texas and today I'm going to talk about sclerotherapy for the treatment of leg veins. As a board-certified dermatologist I often see patients who present with leg veins they either don't like the appearance of or that they feel are causing symptoms. Varicose veins can occur really at any age and there's a number of ideologies that can contribute to them. However patients want them treated just for cosmetic purposes and sometimes patients are really feeling that they're having symptoms related to these dilated veins. Those symptoms can be anything from slight discomfort to cramping, leg swelling, and burning. If you have bothersome leg veins or varicose veins it's important to be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist to determine what would be the appropriate treatment for you.
Sclerotherapy is most appropriate for small veins that are typically asymptomatic in the legs. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the vein. The solution would basically irritate the wall of the vein and cause it to collapse and then for a blood clot to form. And then overtime, usually over the course of weeks to months that vein would fade completely. In some patients serial treatments such as two or three treatments would be required to completely treat a vein. If you are deemed to be an appropriate candidate for sclerotherapy for your first treatment you would come into the office, we would recommend that you would wear loose comfortable clothing so that we could easily access the legs. Prior to beginning the treatment the areas that would be treated will be cleaned thoroughly with a solution and then each individual vein is injected with a solution. As the practitioner we're able to see that the injection is working because the vein would disappear as the solution courses through it. Once the veins are treated we use cotton balls and a small bandage to cover each side of entry and then at the end of the treatment compression stockings are placed over the treated area. After the treatment you typically need to wear the compression stockings as much as possible for several days up to a few weeks. The final result from this treatment is seen within weeks up to a month. And then at that point any residual veins can be treated with a second session.
