In 1962, a rocket engineer named Gene Middlebrooks applied what he’d learned designing ballistic missiles to build and sell turbine-based power-adding equipment for cars. And when we say “turbine-based”, we don’t mean turbochargers. His “turbo drag axle” was a revolutionary invention that used a turbine to drive the axle of a car, which let drivers toggle their car between comfortable street ride and absolutely mind-boggling power.
