This is fine-tuning now but pays off in the future. The best time for this is right after blooming but they are very hardy and you can pretty much do this any time it's not very cold. Let’s not get too caught up in rules and just get it done. Same with azaleas and other flowering evergreens. Note: iif you're pruning any shrub when it’s very hot, give it lots of water and fertilize if it’s not very healthy. The second one we’re pruning here has some dead branches on it and those can be taken off at any time.
