Francis Ford Coppola made two adaptations of S.E. Hinton's young adult novels in the same year. The first, THE OUTSIDERS, was a crowd pleasing hit with critics and audiences, the second, RUMBLE FISH, did not have as broad an appeal, but is a very challenging and original film. Matt Dillon plays Rusty James, a teenager who lives in the shadow of his outlaw older brother known only as Motorcycle Boy, played by Mickey Rourke. They live in a world of violence and lawlessness, with little hope for the future. It was, and is, an extremely unusual film for Hollywood and it confused many audiences. In recent years, however, it has come to be regarded as a classic. As Roger Ebert said, "Who but Coppola could make this film? And, of course, who but Coppola would want to?"
