World leaders have condemned the attack with US President Joe Biden saying the situation was "very worrisome".
Haiti's main airport has been closed as the investigation into the assassination ramps up.
Some regional powers have called for an international mission to help stabilise the government and the United Nations Security Council is expected to meet to discuss the situation.
