Arnold Iron Whey was one of the most anticipated products on the market. As a whole few supplement lines have enjoyed so much media coverage as the Arnold Schwarzenegger Series. The line is produced by MusclePharm, so Arnold didn’t start his own company, but just licensed his name. There is a massive difference between licensing your name to a company and starting your own company, such as Rich Gaspari (Gaspari Nutrition), Ronnie Coleman (Ronnie Coleman Signature Series) or Jay Cutler (Cutler Nutrition) to name a few.
So in essence you are buying a MusclePharm product with Arnold’s logo and name on it. But is Iron Whey a product worth buying? Let’s find out.
Arnold Iron Whey Supplement Facts
Each serving of Iron Whey (about 32g) will provide you with:
• 120 calories
• 1g of fat, of which saturates 0.5g
• 6g of carbohydrates, of which sugars 2.5g
• 22g of protein
Overall, the numbers are good. Fat is low and protein is high per serving. However, the amount of carbohydrates is a bit high for a lean protein powder. It would have been great if they could be brought down to 3g to 4g per serving, but that’s not a big deal.
Arnold Iron Whey Ingredients Profile
The first thing we see in the ingredients list is a 100% Whey Protein Blend, which is comprised of:
• Whey Protein Concentrate
• Whey Protein Isolate
• Whey Protein Hydrolysate
Since it is a proprietary blend and concentrate comes first, my wild guess is that you are getting primarily whey concentrate with small amounts of Isolate and Hydrolysate.
The blend is then followed by Amino Matrix, which is comprised of:
• L-Glycine
• L-Taurine
• BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine) (3.1.2 Patent Pending Ratio)
• L-Glutamine
Straight off the bat I can tell you that this Amino Matrix blend is complete crap. Sure, you are getting muscle-building BCAAs, but they come third after glycine and taurine. And since the amounts are hidden behind yet another blend, you don’t know how much of each you are getting.
Taste and Mixability
Now let’s check the taste and mixability of Iron Whey. I am mixing one scoop with around 250ml of water. As you can see, it creates a thick, smooth shake without any clumps and bits. So the powder mixes very well in a blender bottle. You will have some serious difficulties if you decide to stir it in a glass, so do use a blender bottle.
As for the flavour, the one I am reviewing is Chocolate. It taste like creamy chocolate or like melted chocolate ice-cream. I can’t say it is the best-tasting protein powder out there, especially if you compare it to Syntha-6, but it does taste nice. It’s certainly a protein powder that you can use to satisfy your cravings if you are on a diet.
The rest of the flavours that it comes in are:
• Banana Swirl
• Cookies & Cream
• Peanut Butter
• Strawberry Banana
• Vanilla
Out of those I’ve also tried Cookies & Cream, which is not bad but definitely not anything spectacular.
The Bottom Line
What’s the bottom line, is Arnold Iron Whey worth buying? The prices that it comes in are as follows:
2lb - $25 / £26
5lb - $50 / £35
In my opinion this is just a regular protein powder. The ingredients include the stereotypical whey protein blend, in which concentrate comes first. You also get that infamous Amino Matrix, which caused quite a lot of problems for MusclePharm. Even though they are claiming that the product is not amino spiked (and even released their own research), I am still taking this with a grain of salt. So in regards to the ingredients in the product, it does not stand out at all, if anything MusclePharm just shot itself in the foot.
In regards to the nutrition information, it is not bad. Carbs could have been brought down slightly, but that’s not a big issue. The product mixes and tastes good, but it is certainly not something that people will be talking about. Syntha-6, MyoFusion and Phase8 are all products that leave you craving for your next shake. I certainly didn’t feel that way after drinking Iron Whey.
Overall, the product is not bad, but it could have been so much better. It’s a fact that people are buying into strong marketing. Most people would have tried Iron Whey just out of curiosity. If MusclePharm have done a good job, this product could have been a legend. Sadly, it is not.
But that’s my opinion about Arnold Iron Whey. I am curious to read yours in the comment section below.
