Ben Kapilow has served as the Resident Music Director for the Media Theatre for the Performing Arts since Summer 2017. In this position, he has music directed hundreds of performances of over 20 shows for their Broadway Series, Teen, and Children's programs. He also worked as a Music Director for the Mother of Providence School in Wallingford, PA and the St. Pius X School in Broomall, PA. He was the music director at the 2022 Gala for the Walnut Street Theatre, where he also has worked as an audition accompanist.
He hosts an interview podcast called All Keyed Up which has received downloads across all 50 states and 70 countries and was named one of the Top Piano Podcasts of 2021 by Welp Magazine. He has been featured on the TopCast Podcast, Josh Wright Piano Podcast, Piano Pantry Podcast, and the Piano Parent Podcast, and he was a presenter at the 2022 Expand Online Summit.
Ben began studying piano in elementary school and composition in middle school, taking lessons with jazz composer Kris Davis and then at The Juilliard School with Daniel Ott at age 17. He continued his studies with Samuel Adler and Derek Bermel at the Bowdoin International Music Festival on a Monroe C. Beardsley Fellowship.
As a composer, his works have been performed by Symphony Number One, the Great Noise Ensemble, Trio Ex Animo, the University of Scranton Singers, the Swarthmore College Orchestra, and at the Jack O'Lantern Blaze Festival in Hudson Valley, New York for two consecutive seasons. He also composed incidental music for the American Thymele Theater's production of Hecuba.
One of Ben's biggest interests, however, is writing music for children, as his pieces have been performed by about 40 elementary and middle school vocal and instrumental groups. The Media Theatre has premiered seven of his children's musicals, including "Princess and the Pea" for which he wrote the script, score, and lyrics. His children's musical "Peter Pan and Wendy,” written with Kate Herzlin, was additionally performed at the American Contemporary Theater of Connecticut in Summer 2018.
Active in education, Ben currently teaches private piano, songwriting, and voice lessons through the Media Theatre. His studio currently includes approximately 55 students and he is intricately involved in the theater’s education program. In the past, he has taught private lessons for the Darlington Arts Center, Meridee Winters School of Music, and In-Home Music Teachers. He served as Music Technology Instructor for the Nelly Berman School of Music, Lead Songwriting Instructor for Groove LLC, Music Program Assistant at the Roundhouse Theatre, Teaching Assistant for an EPGY course called “How Music Works” at Stanford University, and Composition Assistant at the New York Summer Music Festival. He currently holds PreK-12 Music Teacher Certification for the state of Maryland.
In 2017, he graduated Pi Kappa Lambda from the Peabody Conservatory with an M.M. in Music Composition. In 2013, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Swarthmore College with a B.A. in Music and Psychology.
