Temporary protected status (TPS) allows migrants to legally stay in the U.S. when natural disaster, armed conflict, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions make it unsafe to return home.

Since Congress first enacted TPS in 1990, migrants from 22 countries have been able to find safety in the U.S., legally living and working within its borders. But for many, including hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans and Haitians, those protections may soon come to an end.
