The video above shows Dr. Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD manipulating the structure of the knee recently named the "anterolateral ligament" or "ALL" by Dr. Steven Claes in his study "Anatomy of the Anterolateral Ligament of the Knee".
In the past, Dr. Ron Losse and Dr. Jack Hughston have researched this exact structure in the knee, referring to it as the "mid-third lateral capsular ligament", Dr. Claes and his team refer to this structure as the anterolateral ligament "ALL" in their study. Each of these researchers, as well as other medical researchers, have reported that this ligament is important in providing a level of stability to the knee.
Dr. Claes and his team have dug deeper into the anterolateral ligament "ALL" through an anatomic, clinically relevant biomechanical, MRI and clinical study to analyze the exact importance that the ALL provides to knee stability.
In patients who have suffered an ACL tear and undergone ACL reconstruction, around 5 -- 15 percent still have knee instability. There are a variety of anatomical structures or knee issues that could be the root of this instability. In some clinics, a double-bundle ACL reconstruction is performed to try to minimize this risk, but to date there is no clinical significance between single and double-bundle ACL reconstructions either in the biomechanical lab or in clinical outcome studies. There is also the possibility of surrounding structures in the knee such as the MCL and posterolateral corner structures, which previous research has shown plays a significant role in providing stability to the knee and protecting a cruciate ligament reconstruction.
Dr. LaPrade believes that Dr. Claes and his team are on the right path to determining the exact role that the anterolateral ligament plays in knee stability, specifically for the small percentage of patients who still experience instability after ACL reconstruction. Future studies on the ALL structure are necessary to validate this study, and medical professionals around the world are looking forward to seeing the innovative path that this study will lead to.
