The 12th stage of the Tour de France takes the riders over 165.1 kilometres from Briançon to Alpe d'Huez. On the way there they cross the Galibier and theCroix de Fer, while the final climb guarantees a real orange party.
Yes, this year's Quatorze Juillet (French National Day) is orange. Although you have to be honest and admit that no Dutchman has won on the Oranienberg for years. In 1989, Gert-Jan Theunisse was responsible for the last Dutch success in the winter sports village.
Steven Kruijswijk and Tom Dumoulin coloured the ride on the last visit in 2018, however, with the former having to end a 70-kilometre solo 3.5 kilometres from the finish, while Dumoulin was only beaten by Geraint Thomas in a sprint for the stage win.
In 2017, the Tour was last in the starting town of Briançon. The race went to the Izoard and there Warren Barguil struck with a successful solo on the final climb.
This time, a finish in Alpe d'Huez is on the agenda. The final climb with its 21 hairpin bends is 13.8 kilometres long and starts in Bourg d'Oisans. The average gradient is 8.1%, with the most difficult part occurring at kilometre 10. There, the road climbs by 11.5 %.
This is already tough, but it will feel even tougher because the riders already have to master two big mountains in the run-up. Just 10 kilometres after the start they climb the Galibier, a 23-kilometre giant with an average gradient of 5.1%.
The descent is interrupted by the Col du Télégraphe, which is more like a false flat of 4.5 kilometres from this side, and then the pilots fly back down into the valley.
After more than 80 kilometres they are in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and there the Col de la Croix de Fer begins. It is a 29-kilometre climb with 5.2%, although this average percentage is actually meaningless. In the first half, the Croix de Fer regularly climbs in double digits, while there are also small descents. The last 6 kilometres are a little flatter and then the road climbs at an average of 7.6%.
A long descent brings the riders to Allemond, and 10 kilometres later it's time for the climb to Alpe d'Huez."
