Meet Dagmar Kress. Dagmar is an International World Aerobatic pilot who has competed in world championships for the United States and also for Germany — where she is from. She is a certified flight instructor and has been involved in aviation for about 30 years. Dagmar is the faculty head coach for the MSU Denver Aerobatics team, where she teaches courses in aerospace sciences. She is also a board member at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum™.
In this video, Dagmar tells her story of how she got into aviation, and specifically aerobatic flight. Aerobatics is the practice of flying maneuvers involving aircraft attitudes that are not used in normal flights. These include rolls, loops, spins, dives, and any maneuvers where the airplane has a pitch of more than 30 degrees or a bank of more than 60 degrees. Aerobatic training enhances a pilot's ability to recover from unusual flight conditions, and thus is an element of many flight safety training programs for pilots. While many pilots fly aerobatics for recreation, some choose to fly in aerobatic competitions, a refereed sport.
For Dagmar, aviation is about peace and freedom. The feeling of being above the clouds, the joy of flying figures impossible to achieve on the ground, and ultimately, the possibility of flight as a way to connect the world.
