26-year-old Irish woman, Bray County Wicklow Ireland boxer Katie Taylor has won the Olympic Gold Medal this afternoon after beating Sofya Ochigava of Russia in the lightweight final at the ExCeL Arena in London.
Final Score: 10 to 8
The people of Ireland came to a complete standstill to watch the dynamic young female boxer, now a major celebrity worldwide, win OLYMPIC GOLD for IRELAND
The fight was tied at 2-2 after the first round, and Taylor trailed 4-3 after the second round.
However, sure footed and never one to give up, KATIE TAYLOR went on to win the third round 4-2 to lead 7-5, and then held on for the win.
This has been the first Olympic Games in which women competed 'inside the boxing ring' and KATIE TAYLOR'S OLYMPICS GOLD MEDAL BID attracted the attention of the world.
Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach Enda Kenny said Taylor was "a force of nature whose pioneering spirit and boxing brilliance have seen her realise her personal dream of winning Olympic gold."
