Australian British Chamber of Commerce CEO David McCredie says the looming UK-Australia free trade deal highlights the fact the UK has become a “really open, global Britain” post-Brexit.
Trade Minister Dan Tehan is confident he can secure a deal to the UK food market within six weeks which could see Australian beef exports to the UK rise tenfold.
However, Mr McCredie told Sky News “it’s important to keep in context that agriculture’s only a very small part of this deal”.
“More important is the messaging that the UK is really an open, global Britain.
“When you think back to Boris Johnson’s speech at the beginning of last year, before the pandemic at Greenwich, he was really clear that this is an opportunity … for British exporters to get out amongst markets like Australia, like other places in Asia.
“And of course, they’re talking about the US as a free trade agreement possibility in the future as well”.
