The ACCC has launched a Federal Court action against supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths alleging both companies broke consumer law by promoting misleading discounts.
The Chair of ACCC Gina Cass-Gottlieb told Sky News Australia Coles’ ‘down down’ promotion and Woolworths’ ‘prices dropped’ promotion “misrepresented” the discount on “hundreds” of popular household supermarket products.
“We, therefore, allege those discounted prices were misleading because actually, the discount was illusory,” she said.
“In many cases, Woolworths and Coles planned to establish the price spike price in order to set up a new higher price for the purposes of the was price for those was now price discounting promotions.”
