The idea of the Indian Super League was initiated in December 2010, when the
AIFF signed a 15-year, ₹700 crore deal with Reliance Industries and the International
Management Group. The league was officially launched on 21 October 2013 by
IMG–Reliance, Star Sports, and the All India Football Federation.
Eight teams were formed from eight cities in the country belonging to industrialists,
cricketers, and film stars, after a bidding process conducted in March 2014. In 2017,
two new teams joined from Bengaluru and Jamshedpur. One more joined in 2019
from Hyderabad and the franchise from Delhi shifted its base to Odisha, making a
total count of 10 teams, with the franchise from Pune ceasing to exist. From 2020
onwards, the two legacy clubs from Kolkata: Mohun Bagan and East Bengal joined
the ISL- Mohun Bagan with a merger with the most successful franchise thus far
ATK to make a newer identity called ATK Mohunbagan, totalling a total of 11 clubs in
the league now.
Atletico De Kolkata, owned by Indian cricket legend Saurav Ganguly, won the
first-ever ISL under Spanish manager Antonio Lopez Habas. The former franchise
ATK is still the most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Super League,
winning the competition 3 times. Chennaiyin FC is next with two titles. The most
successful side in the tournament to have never won are Kerala Blasters –they’ve
finished runners-up three times.
FC Goa have qualified 6 times for the playoffs, the highest number of qualifications
for a team, while East Bengal FC are the only team to have never qualified for the
playoffs.
