An State (also called a nation or country) is an area with defined boundaries organized into a political unit and ruled by an established government that has control over its internal and foreign affairs. When a state has total control over its internal and foreign affairs, it is called a sovereign state. A location claimed by a sovereign state is called a territory. Currently, there are 195 countries in the world. About 193 countries are member states of the United Nations and 2 countries are non-member observer states: the Holy See and the State of Palestine.
The idea or concept of a state originated in the Fertile Crescent between the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea. The first ancient states that formed during this time were called city-states.
It is generally accepted that the first cities in the world rose in Sumer and, among the most important, were Eridu, Uruk, Ur, Larsa, Nippur, and Kish. The city of Uruk is held to be the first true city in the world.
A city-state is a sovereign state that encompasses a town and the surrounding landscape. Often, city-states secured the town by surrounding it with walls and farmlands were located outside of the city walls. Later, empires formed when several city-states were militarily controlled by a single city-state.
The shape of a state is important because it helps determine potential communication internally, military protection, access to resources, and more.
Compact states have relatively equal distances from their center to any boundary much like a circle. They are often regarded as efficient states. An example of a compact state would be Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi.
Elongated states have a long and narrow shape. These states face many problems particularly internal communication which causes isolation of towns from the capital city. Malawi is an example of elongated states.
Prorupted states occur when a compact state has a portion of its boundary extending outward exceedingly more than the other portions of the boundary. Some of these types of states exist so that the citizens can have access to a specific resource such as a large body of water.
A state that has a panhandle or peninsula region that juts out, away from the rest of the state like a finger or arm
As the word 'fragmented' usually meaning 'in pieces,' a fragmented state is one that is simply divided or separated by a barrier.
A fragmented state has several noncontiguous pieces of territory. Archipelagos such as Philippines, Indonesia, and Fiji are examples of fragmented states.
State boundaries are determined either by physical features such as rivers, mountains, deserts, or glaciers or by cultural features such as religion, culture, or ethnicity. Boundaries are actually dynamic features that vary with space and time. Throughout most of human history, boundaries were determined by frontiers where no political entity controlled the area. These were often large, uninhabitable regions such as deserts, oceans, glaciers, etc. But technological and communication advancements have allowed nations to protect their regions without the need of frontiers. Today, most frontiers have been replaced by boundaries. #StateShapesAndBoundaries #TypeOfSateBoundaries #TypesOfStateShapes #DifferentTypesOfStateBoundaries #DifferentTypesOfStateShapes #WhatIsState #StateBoundaries #StateShapes #FragmentedStates #ElongatedStates #ProruptedStates #CompactStates #LandlockedCountries #learningAndSharing #UPSC #UPSCHindi #SPSC #UPM #SPSC #CSS #RRB #RRBNTPC #IBPS #CTET #CSE #ICAR #SSC CGL #DRDO #NDA #RPSC #OPSC #BPSC #CDS #IES #CAPF #CGL #CPO #JE #NTPC #SBI #PoliticalGeography #Geography #SaadRahoojo #SindhUniversity
