Breathtaking Scenery, Sandstone Cliffs, and an Immeasurable Expanse. These are the things we expect to see when we visit the Grand Canyon. What don't we expect Uranium, did you know that the Four Corners region is home to one of the major known deposits of metal in the U.S?
Would you like some radiation with your vacation? Just joking. The naturally occurring Uranium deposits are not actually located in the Park's boundaries and even if they were, it's unlikely that they would cause much harm. But Uranium mining does occur in the U.S and because it can affects its surroundings there should known if you plan to buy land.
Number one, where does Uranium mining occur in the United States? Well, Wyoming is actually the state with the most mining at the moment but the entire Four Corners region is home to Uranium deposits and historic Uranium mines. Right now there is a moratorium on Uranium exploration in the Grand Canyon region that will last until 2032, but a recent 2022 attempt to permanently ban Uranium mining in the region quietly died in the Senate.
Now the band's failure does not means that mines will suddenly pop up in the Grand Canyon. The bill after all could be reintroduced again but there is also our second point. Uranium mining's Peak has passed.
In the 1980's most mills collapse due to Falling prices and safety concerns. The days of Dr Strangelove are long gone. We no longer had the same huge demand for Uranium in our industry but existing nuclear power plats still need a continuous source of the material which leads to point three.
The four countries that produces the most Uranium includes Australia, Canada, Russia, and Kazakhtans, and these countries are where the U.S sources. Most of its material but in the midst of the Ukrainian conflict there is a growing need to find alternative source for Uranium that previously came from Russia. Fortunately or perhaps unfortunately, our fourth pointers tells us that the U.S Uranium mining industry could see a Revival if Uranium prices rise or new technology lowers mining costs.
There are a number of existing mines that could either be expanded or reopened throughout the Western U.S. This does not mean that the Grand Canyon region could see more mining in the future especially because there is at least one mine that is grandfathered in and not subject or the moratorium. This is why the Havasupai tribe those territory lies within the Grand Canyon as well as the local business owners have been fighting for a permanent ban on uranium mining, but why should you care?
Well, as pointer number five shows Uranium mining does have the potential.
