Ringgold is just over the state line from Chattanooga, Tennessee. It’s railroad depot has stood here since 1850. It was crucial in the delivery of supplies to the Deep South during the war. Confederate General Cleburne was charged to protect this depot at all costs in late November, 1863. Winning this battle was so important to the North that even though General Joseph Hooker commanded the Union troops here, Generals Ulysses S. Grant AND William T. Sherman showed up also! In fact, even with all of that brass in command, the Union army suffered more losses than the Confederates and lost the battle. General Hooker was blamed for the loss and was ordered back to Chattanooga. He had lost the confidence of his commanders.
The train depot is still standing in Ringgold and clearly shows the damage from Yankee artillery. Also, I show you the brick home used as the headquarters for General Grant! He even tried to compensate the homeowner $50 in greenbacks for use of her home. She said she would only take Confederate money… loyal to the cause.
