This is the tenth episode of my locally-based documentary series about the Second World War. It consists mainly of interviews with WWII veterans that resided near Lancaster, which I recorded between 2011 and 2013. This episode focuses on the liberation of Western Europe (1944 - 1945), and consists mainly of Lance Rooke (1926 - 2016) describing his experiences with the 6th Airborne Division, including the Battle of Merville Gun Battery, the Battle of Breville and the Battle of the Bulge. It also features Ron Meadows (1920 - 2016) recalling when he crash landed in Spitfire in Normandy. Both of these veterans received the Legion d'Honneur for their participation in the liberation of France.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who agreed to be interviewed for this series, and to Lancaster Military Heritage Group, the Royal British Legion, and the friends and relatives of the veterans for helping me get in touch with these people. I also wish to thank Lancaster University Film Society and LA1TV for providing me with filming equipment and advice.
The next episode will focus on the Allied invasion of Germany in 1945.
