Both The Netherlands and Israel had strong showings during the 2019 European Championship, each finishing the tournament tied at 4-1 in the A-pool, Israel's only loss coming at the hands of The Netherlands. On this night, during the Olympic Qualifier just one week later, Israel was more than ready for the rematch.
In the bottom of the 1st Israel jumped ahead 2-0 on a 2-out homer by Nicholas Rickels. The Dutch wasted no time replying with back-to-back doubles to lead off the top of the 2nd cutting Israel's lead in half. In the bottom of the inning Israel doubled their 1st inning total and jumped ahead by 5. That would not be all the action in this game but it was the bulk of it and nothing that came after would change the outcome.
Both pens were well-used. Both benches had a multitude of contributors with no truly standout performances amongst the many great plays. Defensively however, there was one player who caught our attention by thoroughly covering the basics.
Loosing catcher Hendrik Clementina makes two sensational plays at the plate that any aspiring catchers should take note of starting at 5:15. In the bottom of the 5th Hendrik holds the glove steady, for what seems like a far too long pause, waiting until he hears the umpire call the strike. At 6:17 Clementina follows the runner as he slides past and makes sure to apply the tag on the lean back, ensuring the out because the runner, tucked the wrong leg on his slide. Clementina’s consistency in the fundamentals resulted in two clutch plays for The Kingdom.
