The NSW government’s pledge to spend $500 million on refuges for women and children fleeing domestic violence is an “incredibly important announcement” that ensures no person in the state is “left behind”, says Premier Dominic Perrottet.
The investment will see 75 new refuges established in locations “where there is need” with funding also going towards social and affordable housing for victims.
“Today we’re putting together the largest package for victim survivors of domestic violence in our state’s history, close to half a billion dollars in investment,” the premier said.
“I think one of the silver linings of the pandemic is, yes we focused on the health support, yes we focused on economic and business support, but we don’t want any single person in this state to be left behind.
“There is no person, no woman, no children, who should suffer domestic violence and live in those environments, and from the state’s perspective, we want to do everything we can to ensure that that support is provided for survivors of domestic violence right across our state.
“No one should suffer in this way, and we know that this significant investment today will make a real difference to women and to children right across this state.”
