Just fifteen years-old at the time, South Africa's Joan Harrison made a lasting impression at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games. As she edged ahead of Geertje Wielema from the Netherlands to finish first in the women's 100m backstroke competition, Joan Harrison became not only first South African swimming Olympic champion but also the youngest South African ever to win the Olympic gold medal. New Zealand's Joan Stewart completed the podium taking the bronze medal.
