The Skillshare classed mentioned in this video is “Demystifying Liquid Watercolors and Creating Magic” by Camilla Damsbo Brix. Sign up for Skillshare with the link above, and then it’ll be easy to find her class by searching for "liquid watercolors" in the fine art section. You can also find Camilla on Instagram @camilla_damsbo_art.
My class is called "Watercolor Mixing Based on Pigment Properties" and you can find my under my name, Denise Soden, rather than In Liquid Color.
Today we’re going to be taking a fairly detailed look at the Dr. Ph Martin’s Hydrus Watercolors (Set 1), compare them to both traditional watercolors as well as Dr. Ph Martin’s Bombay India Ink, and take a look at how they work in a painting.
To be entirely honest, these watercolors are pretty high maintenance for my style of painting. Having to fiddle with extra storage space and a separate palette are extra steps is exactly why I don’t work with acrylic or oils on a regular basis… not to mention that a klutz like me combined with these little glass bottles could easily be a recipe for disaster. However, there are a lot of great things about them too. How about that Hansa Yellow Light, amirite? If you have ample space and enjoy working with wet media, these may be the paints for you.
There are a few things I didn’t get a chance to mention in the voice over. Some of these paints don’t flow as much as you may expect them to for a liquid medium, but it varies by pigment. Also, I used six drops of the Hydrus Liquid Watercolors in the phthalo green tests, while using 14 drops of Bombay India Ink for the same results, just as a point of reference. Despite their set up and upkeep, they are really fun and super vibrant, and make for a zen little koi painting project.
