World's Rarest Chimpanzee Born
Mum Zeezee is aware of the dominant male chimps Dylan and Carlos becoming agitated and boisterous as they participate in chimp displays near her new baby chimp Jeff, she quickly grabs him from female chimp Pattie, who was caring for him and carrying him around on her back to protect the baby chimp from the potential danger of the male chimps and coas in the chimp house.
Baby Chimp Jeff is a Western Chimpanzee, a critically endangered species, born at chester zoo to mother chimpanzee Zeezee
Jeff is so special and an important addition to the chester zoo troop, adding security to the survival of this magnificent species of Great Ape
Zeezee is an experienced mum and has had other offspring born at the world famous zoo, including Stevie, big sister to little chimp Jeff.
Zeezee is very trusting of some of female chimps she is close to in the group but is still very wary of letting the big male chimps get too close to the baby chimps
The New Baby Chimp is the first Male Baby chimpanzee to be born at the zoo since Carlos in 2005, the last 3 babies born since 2019 have all been female
Baby Chimp Jeff was born on 9th December 2022 and spent the first few weeks bonding with the Chester Zoo chimp troop
Chester Zoo announced the baby chimps birth on social media 11th January 2023 and later on 17th January 2023 announced that his name is Jeff, named in tribute to Jeff Beck British Rock Guitarist.
This is also in keeping with the zoo tradition of naming baby chimps after iconic pop and Rock Music legends
