Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
Well, even though 900 Global missed the punny opportunity to release it on March 14, the all new Eternity Pi takes the top spot for the brand as the strongest piece in their line. Inside of the Pi is the same Epoch core that was in the original eternity with its 2.49 RG, .050 Differential and an .014 Int Diff. New to SPI though is the Reserve Blend 901 Solid cover which comes out of the box at a really dull 2000 grit.
For the layout, I went with a 4.5x5x2.5 (65x4.5x50) 2LS Layout. Similar to what I put on my RST X-3. This is a heavy roll kind of layout as I think the only chance I have to use this thing effectively is on higher volume sport patterns where I need to control the lane, so the layout was meant to aide more in that than in getting this one to look great on a house condition.
But even with that, on the lanes, the Eternity Pi didn’t look too bad. I definitely had to fire it down the lane to get it to the pocket, but even with that and the fact that this thing just chugs through the corner, it got through the pins pretty well. Its definitely not my favorite look, but it was more effective than I would have guessed it to be.
And that’s probably my favorite part about this one from 900 Global. On a condition where I can normally never get a dull asym to look good no matter what I do, I was able to find a usable shape without having to get into extreme angles through the front. What’s more is I even got a few of those hits where the ball rolls out but the pins just all hit each other which I never get so that’s a bit of an added bonus.
On the downside though, its still a strong, solid asym. Most bowlers who bowl on traditional league conditions just don’t need one that digs this hard. Yes, there’s some exceptions to that rule which we’ll get to, but if 90% of your games are being bowled on house shots, I struggle to see how most bowlers would effectively fit this much strength into their arsenal.
But, if you’re bowling events on the tough stuff or really high volume conditions, I think that pairing this one with the storm phaze 2 and the original Eternity from 900 global would be great pieces to go along with the Pi. Putting this one with its pearl counterpart is just kind of obvious, and then bridging that gap with one of the most proven symmetrical solids in the Phaze 2 would give you three really strong, but distinct shapes on the way to the pins.
For the cross brand comparisons, lets first take a look at the Pride Dynasty from Motiv. Here you can see how less core and a little lane shine can go a long way to making a more usable motion on these high ratio conditions. The dynasty is much easier to get through the mid lane, and even though it’s still smooth off the spot, doesn’t have any issues getting through the pins to get the corners out.
Second, I grabbed the Hellcat XLR8 from DV8 and as its lane shined up a bit you can see how some of the performance has tamed down, but it’s still a struggle to get all 10 to fall over with it. The Hellcat and XLR8 both suffer from the same problem of hooking too early on misses inside, and rolling out on misses outside as we have come to expect solid asyms to do.
But even with that, there’s still a couple types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is speed dominant players. If your ball speed is consistently above 18mph, you’ve got a chance to like this one. Its not going to be a do everything kind of piece, but for fresh conditions, I could see those bowlers appreciating never having to worry if the Pi is going to hook.
The second is balanced lefties. This ball feels like a piece that Matt McNeil is going to win another USBC eagle with, so if your game is 1, on the left side of the lane, and two, a stroker, heavy rolling way of delivering the ball, I think there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to be using this one from 900 quite a bit.
So even though it might not be one you see one covered in whipped cream or in my league bag, bowlers that match up with the all new Eternity Pi from 900 Global are sure see it as the slice of their arsenal that brings their highest scores.
