Navasana/Boat Pose
How we sail through life has a lot to do with how we navigate the waters of life and weather the inevitable storms.
No matter which direction you steer your course, they’ll be smoothly sailing and rough waters.
This asana has become a favourite of mine. It fires up the core, your solar plexus, your place of will power. In order to move forward towards your goals and dreams you need the fire of desire. You need to be able to keep steering the ship of your life in your chosen direction.
In the primary series of Ashtanga navasana is five times with a breath count of five. With a daily practice you can imagine how strong you can get. But, not just in the body. The mind gets strong. You stick with it. You accept the shakes, the feeling of wanting to abandon it. You stay with it.
As your willpower and your mind power increase, you begin to take control of your life with more confidence.
So, while it won’t happen through boat pose once, the consistency of practicing the pose will not disappoint you.
Navasana/Boat Pose strengthens the core and lengthens the hamstring muscles. It is balancing pose, so it's important to connect with centre. You may begin, as shown in the tutorial, by simply lifting your toes away from the mat with your hands at your thighs. As you rock forward and back, you'll establish your balance point. Once you are comfortable with that, you can bend your knees, drawing your arms forward. If your hamstrings are tight, you may wish to remain here, focusing on developing core strength. Next, you can begin to straighten your legs coming into the full expression of the pose.
