Hello my dance friends! This week's tutorial focuses on the luscious exterior hip circle--achieved by sliding just outside the midline of your body--with some challenging traveling and hand/arm layers! Detailed description of movement below the following info:
Warm up and posture suggestions start us off:
As always, if you have any questions about this combo or any movement you'd like to see in these tutorials, please leave me a comment and let me know!
This is common movement I practice as a World Fusion or MENAHT-inspired Fusion dancer (what has been previously referred to as "bellydance") and I'm so excited to share this combo with you!
I will always start off with a brief overview of safe posture, and suggestions for pre-dance time warm-up and post-dance time cool-down.
**IF YOU HAVE ANY INJURIES, be sure to consult your physician before performing the movement in this video**
HYDRATE:
Be sure to have loads of water before, during and after dance time!
POSTURE:
--Find your hip bone (anterior superior iliac spine, ASIS) to gauge your hip width
--Place your feet directly beneath your hip bones. This will ensure adequate wiggle room for your body.
--Deeply bend into the knees and ensure your weight is equally distributed on your feet
--Relax your shoulders
--Keep your chest stacked above your hips
PREP:
Some suggested warm-up drills are:
--Squats
--Shoulder rolls
--Side reaches (keep chest parallel to mirror/front wall and extend torso)
Some suggested cool-down stretches are:
--Hip Flexors
--Hamstrings
--Lower Back
--Balance Challenges
----------------------------------------------TODAY'S COMBO-----------------------------------------------
External Hip Circles:
In proper fusion dance posture, contract the left obliques to slide the hips to the right--this will allow for a clean slide, at whatever depth is comfortable for you, without any twisting or lifting at the hips--and contract the right obliques to slide left.
Add a slide front to back, keeping low belly contracted and, again, just sliding beyond your midline or stacked posture.
Combine these by starting on the right, sliding forward, sliding left, then sliding back to create a circle. Repeat with a left hip slide lead. You can optionally add hand waves to these circles.
Traveling with External Hip Circles:
We add a step out-step in-step out-touch/releve foot pattern to 2 external hip circles to alternate traveling right, then left. *This is slightly different from practicing our right/left hip lead circles because our focus when we travel is creating a front to back circle (meaning the forward/backward motion is on the downbeat, as opposed to the right/left motion).
As you extend your right foot out right, the weight is on the left foot and your hips slide left. Your weight becomes distributed on (front of) both feet as your hips slide forward. Your weight shifts right as your hips slide right, and you slide that left foot in as your hips slide back. Repeat this, taking that left foot into releve to prep for stepping out to alternate travel to the left.
Optional Arms for Traveling with External Hip Circles:
As you travel right--your right arm sweeps down and out to your right side as your left arm rises above your head. Then you switch--your right arm merely rises up from its extension, and the left elbow bends, bringing your left arm down to your chest. This happens as you complete your first hip circle. As you complete your 2nd hip circle (before alternating travel), your right arm stays in position, and your left arm swoops down to your hips and out to your left. You can optionally shift your gaze to your lateral arm extension.
Optional Hand Rolls:
4 steps--lift your wrist, cup. your palm, round your fingertips, then extend your fingertips. Try to keep your forearm as still as possible to keep this movement in the hand only. Once you smooth out this movement, try to begin lifting the wrist as you release the fingertips to make it more fluid.
MWAH!!!!
P.S. The #formerlybellydance refers to the current topic in this field of dance on the outdated and derogatory terminology referencing several regional dance cultures that comprise what we collectively know as modern "bellydance".
