Pre-chopping the nucleus means that we are splitting it into smaller pieces, often quadrants, prior to placing the phaco probe in the eye. We have previously shown videos of the Akahoshi pre-chopper and the method using a 27 gauge cannula to split the nucleus. We even have a video of one surgeon doing four different types of pre-chopping. This video shows our guest surgeon using two dedicated instruments, a chopper and a nucleus sustainer, to split the nucleus into four quadrants for easy removal. This makes for a safe and efficient cataract surgery. If you are having challenges learning phaco chop, this technique can be a good introduction for you.
