Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan Papon declared that Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will play the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe as the captain of Bangladesh national cricket team.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will captain the national team against Zimbabwe in the ODI series for one last time as Bangladesh will look forward to a new ODI captain with the World Cup in mind.
As the BCB president said, After this series, Bangladesh will move on for a new ODI captain, under whom the board wants the team to be regrouped well for the upcoming 2023 World Cup.
Papon said that "There is no substitute for Mashrafe as a Captain and we cannot deny his contributions towards Bangladesh cricket and what his captaincy has brought for the Bangladesh team. But, the time has come to decide about his career. I think he will be available in this series depending on his fitness. We will also be a bit lenient about his fitness."
Mortaza has represented Bangladesh in 36 Tests, 217 ODIs and 54 T20Is.
Mortaza made his Test debut on 8 November 2001 against Zimbabwe in the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
In the debut match, Mortaza opened the bowling with Mohammad Manjural Islam and took 4 wickets for 106 runs as Zimbabwe did not bat a second time.
His first, also known as "Maiden", Test wicket was of Grant Flower. Unusually the match was also Mortaza's maiden first-class match. He was the 31st person to have achieved this and the third since 1899.
Mortaza made his first appearance for Bangladesh's one day team on 23 November 2001 against Zimbabwe. Opening the bowling with Mohammad Sharif, Mortaza finished with figures of 2/26 from 8.2 overs.
In June 2009, the BCB relieved Ashraful of the captaincy and appointed Mashrafe as captain for the tours of the West Indies and Zimbabwe. Shakib Al Hasan replaced Mortaza as vice-captain.
Since, Bangladesh played 85 matches under the Captaincy of Mashrafe Mortaza and won 47 matches with 55.29% win ratio.
